With the launch of Ecodesign stoves, we have mentioned the SIA many times. But who actually are the SIA?

The SIA are the Stove Industry Alliance, who developed the Ecodesign initiative to help towards a cleaner, greener environment.

The SIA was launched in 2008 to explain and promote the benefits of wood burning stoves.

The key benefits of the SIA are to:

• To lobby and influence government on legislation affecting stoves and to promote their benefits and environmental advantages.

• To promote and explain the benefits and environmental advantages of stoves as heating appliances.

• To maintain an independently audited system to monitor stove sales trends in the UK.

• To provide a brief to HETAS of those issues which fall within HETAS’s remit and are necessary to fulfil the objectives of the SIA.

• To promote the nature of SIA members’ products and services and how to assess the quality, safety and efficiency of these products.

• To emphasise that the members of the SIA commit to ensuring that their products meet the appropriate standards of quality, safety and efficiency.

Educating the Public & Government:

The SIA is very keen to educate the general public and also the government regarding the carbon savings that can be achieved from wood burning stoves. Furthermore they are keen to demonstrate the significant advantages of the Ecodesign Ready scheme, and how Ecodesign Ready stoves are making a positive contribution to cleaner, sustainable heating.

The SIA has played an important part in recent communications, such as when the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan announced a clamp down on pollution in the Capital, where the press, picking up on this story, unfairly tarnished high efficiency stoves with non-environmentally friendly open fires, saying burning wood is bad for the environment, totally ignoring the fact that an open fire is many times more polluting than an Ecodesign Stove.

Who makes up the SIA?

The SIA is an association, that is made up of stove manufacturers and distributors, wood fuel suppliers, flue and glass manufacturers. SIA’s collective power means they can represent the stove industry with government departments such as Defra and BEIS, giving the stove industry a strong, influential voice.
