Also known as a hole-in-the-wall fire, inset stoves have increased in popularity in recent years. They are popular in a range of properties, but especially new builds, where intelligent use of space is more widely considered. They offer a seamless look and fit nicely into a wall.

Below is an inset wood-burning stove from our range:

An inset wood-burning stove can be as efficient as a traditional freestanding stove, albeit, with an inset stove, heat predominately comes from the front only – although the heat from the back, to some degree, can be vented back into the room. You can recover this heat by installing ventilation at the top and bottom of the chamber. In contrast, a freestanding stove freely radiates heat from all four sides into a room with little or no restriction. A freestanding stove can be placed anywhere in a room as long as there is a suitable chimney/flue connection. An inset stove will need to be built into a wall or partition.

Key advantages of an Inset stove:

Safety – Compared to an open fire, which often has the same visual look as an inset stove sitting flush into a wall, you enjoy much higher levels of safety as the fire glass protects against smoke and burning embers entering a room. However, care must be taken when lighting the fire and reloading.

Efficiency – An inset stove that is Ecodesign and clearSkies approved will have up to 90% lower emissions than an open fire – the same can be said for any stove (inset or freestanding) that is Ecodesign and clearSkies approved.

Space Saving – While an inset stove may not save any more space than an open fire, it will save considerable space compared to a freestanding stove.

Design – An Inset stove comes in various styles and designs. The sleek and neat design are two points people mention when asked about their preferred aesthetics.

Disadvantages of an Inset stove:

Like with any fire, there are disadvantages, the degree to which depends very much on your own requirements and situation. Due to the design and fitment of an inset stove, they can be more expensive to fit compared to a freestanding stove. A lot of preparation needs to take place with an inset stove, and installation can be intricate. However, if you already have a fireplace – perhaps where a retired, open fire used to sit this could save on installation time and cost, although there can be extra costs if you need to modify the current chimney.

You are also limited with locations with an inset stove – with a free-standing stove you are free to locate as you please, as long as you have access to a chimney.
